How to get a good Ranking

SEO ( Search Engine Optimization) still plays an important part in getting a good ranking with the search engines. So, how do you raise your site’s rank? - start with going back to basics!

1) Have good quality content on all pages.
With mainly text, not just graphics. Added headlines, bold text and no spelling or grammatical errors.

2) Target specific keyphrases (more than just one word)
Each page should have individualized keyphrases in the meta tag code.
The specific keyphrases should be found in the page’s text content. But avoid keyword stuffing. Keep the number of repeated keywords to a maximum of three. Use keywords, but don't get too distracted by this tag, don't expect miracles from it.

3) Meta tags
Make sure all meta tags are correct, the minimal set of meta tags is: Title, Description and Keywords.
The title tag is the most important one. Place the page main keyphrases into that page's title tag. Again, write this title tag with your site visitors in mind. The Description tag consists of a summary of that page.

4) Keep working on your linking strategy
(http://budget-webdesign.com/articles/linking.htm)
Offer link exchange to Suppliers, Resellers, web sites about your industry, sites that sell products/services that relate to yours but don't compete with you.
But avoid link farming!

5) Submit your site
Submit to all directories that are related, do the submitting carefully, write your description well and follow the directory's guidelines. Make sure you get your site listed in dmoz.org, probably the most important directory of all. Find directories that focus on your industry and submit your site.

Submitting to directories is more important than submitting to search engines. Search engines send out their spiders and will find your site on their own. The important search engines are google, yahoo and msn.

6) If you have a bigger site, consider a site map page. Make sure all links on all pages work properly, fix broken links immediately.

7) Stay away from frames, and don't have your whole site done in flash

8) Have clean code, link scripts externally, use css files.

9) Keep the goal of your website in mind.
The site is for your customers and should focus on what your clients want. Update your pages regularly.
